Appropriate for grades 5+. This is a 4-4.5
hour program, whose purpose is to educate our next generation on the
importance of protecting the Chesapeake Bay and its rich history while
providing a qualified field experience to reinforce Maryland Learning
Objectives. This is a quality based student directed field experience
that focuses on science.
Students will hypothesize what they think they will discover, and whether
the upper Bay is healthy. They then conduct experiments to test their
hypotheses as we sail around the Susquehanna Flats. They record data
that is reported to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and
used as part of a monitoring program. Students learn about the problems
facing the Bay, the solutions to these problems, and what each individual
can do to improve the health of the Bay.
Cost: $750.00 per 25 students plus 2 teachers/chaperones. This program
qualifies for the Chesapeake Bay Trust grant, which will cover ½
of the cost. Please go to www.cbtrust.org for
more information on the grant.
Split sessions can also be arranged to handle up to 50 students a day.
Please call for information, and details. |

Appropriate for elementary levels 1-3. This is a 4-4.5 hour
2 part program; students spend approx. 2 hours on the Skipjack and 2
hours at the Museum with ½ hour lunch break.
On board the Martha Lewis:
Students will take a front seat approach to navigation, sailing and
simple boat mechanics en route to a treasure that lies hidden in the
harbor in Havre de Grace. Alone with charts, a compass, and pirate riddles,
the students will begin their day with a treasure hunt. They will be
required to listen to historical tales of the Chesapeake Bay and Havre
de Grace in order to decipher riddles leading them on a hunt which culminates
with a sweet reward. Piracy ensues as the students gain an understanding
of the local maritime history and become acquainted with simple navigational
skills.
At the Susquehanna Museum:
Students will use clues from artifacts and primary documents to discover
the lifestyle of the 19th century Lock House residents and canal folk.
Children will learn about the child’s role in these societies.
An emphasis is placed on 19th century technology, including the operation
of the pivot bridge and the outlet lock of the Susquehanna & Tidewater
Canal. If time permits, students will hike the North Park Trail following
the canal towpath for half the hike.
Cost: $350.00 per class of 25 students with 2 teachers/chaperones –
