Save Our Skipjack - The CHC's Blog

The Skipjack Martha Lewis now has a BLOG to help raise awareness of her financial needs due to the many maintenance costs and repairs that are currently taking place. Captain Greg and others will be posting about her progress to keep you informed of how the work is going. Eventually, the blog should include photos of the journey to get Martha back into Ship-Shape condition and ready for the '07 Sailing Season. Check in often, and feel free to leave comments at the blog. Spread the word, and share the link with friends and other bloggers. Put the URL in your email taglines. The more this spreads, the more people will be aware of the help we need.

Ship Sails Closer to Protection
The last remining vessel to work under sail in North America has moved closer to being registered as a National Historic Site.

Last week, the Governor’s Consulting Committee for the Maryland Historical Trust voted unanimously to nominate the Skipjack Martha Lewis, a working oyster dredge based in Havre de Grace, Md., for registration by the National Park Service.

The next step in the process, which takes 6 months to a year to complete, is for the ship to be accepted by the National Park Service.

Martha Lewis takes First Place!!
The Skipjack Martha Lewis took first place again this year at the 10th Annual Choptank Heritage Skipjack Race. Congratulations to our wonderful crew! We had an awesome race, with some of the strongest winds in a long time. Martha had her rails in the water, and was working hard! What an amazing sail. The Thomas Clyde, Rebbeca T. Ruark, Nathan of Dorchester, and Lady Helen all competed. The Helen Virginia was also out with her customers enjoying a private charter during the race. The winds were strong, and sadly, the Thomas Clyde broke their boom about midway through the race. Check out some photos of this year's race (or you can view other year races: 2003 and 2004).

Miss USA Pageant visits the Skipjack Martha Lewis
On Wednesday, April 12, several contestants with the Miss USA Pageant were aboard the Skipjack for some photo and video opportunities for the upcoming show in Baltimore. Captain Byshe and Captain Jake were aboard to welcome the girls, and show them how to raise the sails. They were also available to lend the girls a hand to ensure their safety on and off ofour wonderful vessel... (wink wink).
See more photos here and here.

Skipjack Martha Lewis Decoys Available

This year, new decoys will be available for purchase. Support the Martha Lewis by purchasing a duck carved from old parts of the boat (such as an old boom no longer being used). Previously, canvasback ducks were carved from the boom. This year we have redhead ducks, also carved from the boom. The ducks are numbered (only 13 redheads available) and #1 will be auctioned off. The remaining twelve will be available after the auction—this is a great showpiece to add to your mantel.

Mr. Jobes previously carved 25 magnificent decoys from the original boom of the Skipjack Martha Lewis, making them truly a treasure. All decoys will also come with an official letter of authenticity. Please call the CHC office at 410-939-4078 or to learn more information. Proceeds from the sales go toward educational programs offered by the Chesapeake Heritage Conservancy, Inc. on board the Skipjack Martha Lewis.
